英作文練習 Day 8 as とwhen の違い
One evening as he wandered about the streets with his whole attention fixed on the sky, he bumped into something hard.
ある晩、空に心をとらわれて通りをぶらついていたとき、彼はなにか硬いものにぶつかった。
- wander about ≒ hang around : ぶらつく
- fix one's attention on : 〜に注意をむける
- bump into ≒ strike against : ぶつかる
「〜ときに」に対応する語として as と when があげられますが、この使い分けはどうしたらいいのかということが問題になります。
端的にいうと、as は短い時間（0秒〜十数分？）における同時性を強調します。
as = whileの短い時間(点)バージョンといってもいいかもしれません。
"Look, my darling," the girl said as they walked by the theater.
「あなた、見て」映画館を通り過ぎる時、その少女はいった。
このことから、次のような使い分けができます。
As I left the house I remembered the key.
家を出ようとした時、鍵のことを思い出した。
に対して、
When I left the house I remembered the key.
家を出た時、鍵のことを思い出した。
As 以降の出来事、"left the house" = 「家を離れる」 という抽象的な行為が、 As の作用により、極めて時間的に限定的な行為、「ドアを開けて家を出る」というイメージで解釈されるということです。
as の指定する時間が短い場合、hardly whenと同じ感じになります。
It started to rain as(as soon asにするとパワーアップ!) he came back home.
Hardly had he came back home when it started to rain.
