- outnumberのような意味の強い動詞を用いることにより、訳例1のようなthe number of や at a ratio of といったやや冗長な表現を回避できるが、場合によっては（入試など）訳例1の方が好まれる場合も有り得る。
英作文練習 Day 3 倒置形について
a) Among those present were John and his girlfriend.
→John and his girlfriend were among those present.
b) The door opened, In came a little girl with a red ribbon.
→The door opened, A little girl with a red ribbon came in.
c) Upon this balance depends very largely whether or not civilization will long endure.
→Whether or not civilization will long endure depends very largely upon this balance.
- 倒置形のVがbe動詞であるときには、そのまま日本語のように読めるが（例文a)、そうでないときは注意が必要
- 倒置形が使われるときのパターンは、①もったいぶるとき(a)、②勢いを演出するとき(b)、③強調したいキーワードを文頭にもってくるとき(c)

二酸化炭素の排出量を減らさないと、海水面が上昇する可能性がある
訳例1
If we do not reduce carbon dioxide emissions, there is a possibility that sea level will raise.
訳例2
Our neglect to reduce carbon dioxide emissions may lead sea level to raise.
- 訳例1のようにIfや、there is など、それ自体にはほとんど意味のない抽象的な語を多用すると、文の印象がぼやっとしてしまう。
- if文は、前半が原因、後半が結果を意味することになる場合、causeや、leadなどの動詞によって書き直すことができる。
- 直裁的な表現をしたいときには、訳例2のようにするとよい。
英作文練習 Day 1 AだけでなくBもする
In warmer rooms, women didn't just score better on tests, they tried to answer more questions.
暖かい部屋では、女性はテストでよい成績を残すだけでなく、より多くの問題を解こうとした。
- 「AだけではなくBもする」という表現に対応する基本的なものに①not only A but also B、②B as well as A (A,Bの位置に注意)の二つがある
- not only A but also Bと同様の表現に、not just A but also B、not merely A but also Bがある。
- not only A but (also) Bの also は省略されることもある
- not [only, just, merely] A but (also) B
- 今回の例文では、butも省略されている珍しい例。入試英文法的に可なのかは不明。
- 文の核心となる部分、 In warmer rooms が文頭にあるのでわかりやすい。
